The principal function of the PISTON RINGS is to form a seal between the combustion chamber and the crankcase of the engine.  The goal is to prevent combustion gases from passing into the crankcase and oil from passing into the combustion chamber.
BECO uses the latest materials and coatings available to keep pace with the growing trends in today’s engines.  Materials used are Cast Iron, Ductile Iron and Steel depending on the engine and its specifications.  All BECO Piston Rings are parkerized to protect the ring, improve lubrication and to initiate a quicker seal.  BECO offers many different oil control ring styles for the various engine applications.

Piston Rings are subject to wear as they rub up and down the cylinder bore.  To minimize this, BECO Piston Rings are made of wear resistant materials (cast irons and steels) and coated or treated to enhance the wear resistance.  Typically top and oil control rings are coated with Chromium or Nitrided, possibly Plasma Sprayed or have a PVD (physical vapour deposit) Ceramic coating.  For enhanced scuff resistance and further improved wear most modern diesel engines will have top rings coated with a modified chromium coating.  The lower oil control ring is designed to leave a film of lubricating oil a few micrometres thick on the bore, as the piston descends.  Three piece oil ring, i.e. with two rails and one spacer, is used for gasoline engines.

During the compression and power strokes, the compression ring seals the combustion gases and prevents blow-by. Although blow-by is not completely eliminated it is kept to an acceptable limit.  During the compression and exhaust strokes the cylinder walls are lubricated with oil by throw off from the connecting rod bearings.  Excess oil is wiped off by the piston rings.  Not only does the oil ring have the responsibility of wiping the excess oil off the cylinder walls, but the job is also shared by all of the rings, leaving a fine layer of oil on the wall to provide lubrication for the following ring.  As rings wear, the ability to perform these functions is decreased resulting in oil consumption and blow-by.  When this happens it is time for a new set of rings.
